Peace in South Asia And UN

PAKISTAN’S new permanent representative while presenting her credentials, urged the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to help promote peace and stability in South Asia by advocating the resumption of a broad based dialogue between Pakistan and India aimed at resolving disputes between the two neighbours. For his part, Ban Ki-moon said he wanted to see a resumption of dialogue but stopped short of a call to the two countries to do so the soonest possible as the South Asian region is witnessing instability and mistrust which would be dangerous in the long run.

The fact remains that the incumbent and the former Secretary Generals of the World Body had been pleading meaningful negotiations between Pakistan and India to resolve their critical issues including Kashmir but the leadership in New Delhi never paid any heed to them. The Indian government in violation of the UN resolutions has made the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) non functional on its side of the LoC and it is not being allowed to visit the area to monitor the ceasefire violations. That speaks a lot about Indian lack of respect to the international body while it is hell bent to become permanent member to scuttle any effort that goes against the interest of New Delhi. The Pakistani Ambassador rightly demanded of theSecretary General to strengthen the UNMOGIP and expand it to play its role as India is violating the ceasefire to pressurize Pakistan which is engaged in defeating the menace of terrorism. The question arises how a country violating UN resolutions including those on Kashmir and has not been able to maintain cordial relations with all its neighbours which seriously brings a doubt to the mind about its intensions, can even be a candidate for the UN elite club? It is financing and arming terrorists for activities in Balochistan and FATA to weaken and destabilize Pakistan. In this background, the UN has a special role for promoting peace in South Asia and it will earn respect if it asserts on the Indian leadership to resolve all disputes with neighbours instead of merely making statements.
