WASHINGTON: The United States recognises that Pakistan can play a key role in promoting reconciliation between the Afghan government and the Taliban militants, said two senior US officials.
The officials said that there would be “specific discussions” on the reconciliation process and on Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan during the first official visit of the new Afghan leadership to Washington, which begins on Sunday.
Jeff Eggers, Special Assistant to the US President for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Special Representative Dan Feldman told a news briefing in Washington that the talks would also focus on the emergence of self-styled Islamic State militant groups in the Pak-Afghan region.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, and key members of their unity government begin their four-day official visit to the United States on Sunday.
